How the mighty have fallen….
This restaurant used to be my favourite Persian cuisine back in the day, their quality and taste was far superior to any others out there, starting off with very humble beginnings in a caravan near Earls Court, the food was amazing and they soon gained a massive following and opened up their restaurant in central London.
I must admit for a good few years they maintained the greatness but as of late any time I have visited the taste is no where near what it used to be. I am not sure if the owners changed or if they have just given, they are always busy and being in a tourist area perhaps they do not need to keep high standards.
Anyway, on to the food…
We arrived as a group of eight and had to wait 45 minutes to be seated as they do not take booking. The seating arrangement is quite tight and our table was even tighter. We ordered a few starters, salad Shirazi £3.50 which was very small, dry and not seasoned correctly, Kashkeh Bademjan £3.90 and a Mirza Ghassemi £3.90 which were quite average on the grand scale of Persian starters and seemed rushed and not fresh.
For the main courses we got, Barg £11.90 flattened fillet of lamb), Makhsoos £13.70 (one Barg with one minced skewer) and Alounak Special £13.80(lamb and chicken filets with a mince skewer).
I tried all the dishes and must admit the best part was probably the chicken which was tasty but slightly dry, the other meats were all over cooked and dry which is common place in Alounak (Westbourne Grove) these days and why I and many of my friends and colleagues hardly ever visit any more.
The Koobideh which is one the Persian “Classics” a tender lamb mince skewer char grilled, was specially disappointing, very dry, top half too thin (see in pic) and slightly mangled looking too. The Barg also was over cooked and left with no juicy-ness.
To be honest the meat quality seemed good and fresh but ruined by the chef. I have also visited the other branch in Kensington which is better and I will do a separate review for that one.
