Boondocks a the sister of Stax Diner which some of you may be familiar with, started by Bea Vo in 2013. The restaurant is quite spacious and nicely decorated with American memorabilia, signs and funky custom lights. We went as a group of six people, greeted by their friendly staff we were seated and well taken care of.
The menu has all the usual suspects such as burgers, wings, fried chicken, chilli fries and so on but there are some authentic American “home” style items which I was exited to try such as the Fried Green Tomatoes £4.95 and the Buttermilk Biscuits & Gravy £4.25.
Now for the food story y’all….
We ordered the above mention tomatoes and biscuits as well as some Buffalo Wings £4.50, the Jelapeno Cheddar Cornbread £2.75 and the Chilli Cheese Fries £5.25. The best of this bunch was the cornbread which was rather good with a crispy crust and nice cheesy flavour with a mild jelapeno kick, the fried tomatoes tasted quite bland and if I did not know what was inside the batter I would have not been able to guess. The buffalo wings and fries were quite average, the fries did not have a lot of toppings but did taste nice the chilli was good but not the best I have had. The biggest disappointment was the biscuits, nothing like what I remember from the USA, they were very stodgy rather than light and very bland.
The sides were nice, fries were done well and the fried pickles were also good, good quality crunchy and juicy pickles covered with crunchy batter.
While we were eating we realised they do a range of their own desserts, fresh donuts, deep fried waffles, donut ice cream sandwich etc. We ordered a couple of donuts and some donut holes, they looked really good and smelled even better.
On this day the donuts they had were red velvet and Oreo and let me just say they they were great, truly delicious. The dough had a excellent consistency and taste and not overly sweet or greasy with a scrumptious glaze topping which complimented the dough very well. The doughnut holes gain were very tasty, fried just right, slight crisp shell with a light fluffy and delicious centre, sprinkles with a sweet cinnamon powder and came with a caramel syrup.
For the mains we all ordered Cheese Burgers £8.95 and Fried Chicken & Waffles £12.95. The burger was slightly disappointing, its was a bit on the dry side and kind of broken up (they were all the same), the seasoning was good and the whole execution was not up there with the best.
On the other hand the chicken and waffles was done very well, I could have easily ordered another portion. The waffle was cooked perfectly and was light on the inside and seasoned to have a delightful mild savoury flavour. The fried chicken very tender and succulent with a crispy perfectly cooked outer, then all of that covered with some good maple syrup and wow! Not sure if it is always this good but today its was one of the best I have had in the UK.
